Give your business a boost

Founder of the hugely successful Boost Juice bars, Janine Allis is looking forward to sharing the secrets to her success and the story of Boost Juice – juicy bits and all at the next ETC BusinessLeaders event on Wednesday 12 March.

Janine and her team have grown the business from one store in Adelaide to more than 240 franchised stores stretching from Melbourne to Portugal, covering many places in-between.

Boost has more than 5000 employees and turns over more than $130 million dollars per year.

Not surprisingly, Boost has won numerous prestigious awards over the years including induction into the My Business Hall of Fame, ARA Retailer of the Year in 2007 and AMEX Franchisor of the Year in 2005. In 2004 Janine was also recognised as Telstra Australian Business Woman of the Year.

But that’s not all.

Today Janine is Managing Director of franchising company Retail Zoo, which last year opened 36 new stores, buying coffee chain Cibo Espresso and launching a new chicken shop chain, Hatch.

In addition, Retail Zoo owns Salsa’s Fresh Mex Grill which is about to hit 50 restaurants.

Janine, who was ranked at number 20 on the 2013 BRW Rich Women list, plans to double the size of Retail Zoo within 10 years.

At 48, Janine is not the standard entrepreneur.

She left school at 16 and has no formal business training.

She spent her 20s travelling the world and dabbling in a variety of jobs including cinema manager in Singapore, ad executive in Melbourne and head stewardess on David Bowie’s yacht.

When she hit her 30s Janine decided to focus on a career.

She came up with the idea for starting a juice bar after spending time in the US and noting the established market for healthy juice bars.

She felt she could not only replicate the offering in Australia, but also do better.

Janine holds strategy meetings every six months to ensure the business is on track and in Boost’s formative years, soaked up as much information as possible from mentors such as Geoff Harris the co-founder of Flight Centre and Roger and Lesley Gillespie, founder of Bakers Delight.
