Dos

Before the interview

  • Research appropriate clothing to wear – it is better to be overdressed than underdressed
  • Ensure your clothing has no creases
  • Make sure you have appropriate shoes to wear that are clean and meet the necessary health and safety standards for the role. For example, boots for a construction/labouring job
  • Research the business and position
  • Practice answers to standard questions. For example:
    • What are your strengths and weaknesses
    • Why do you want to work here
  • Be very familiar with your resume and cover letter
  • Practise smiling and giving a firm handshake for when you meet the interviewer
  • Write down some questions to ask during the interview to show your interest in the role
  • Consider your personal hygiene and make sure you have showered, brushed your hair, cleaned your teeth
  • Plan to arrive 5-10 minutes before the interview time
  • Switch off your mobile phone

During the interview

  • Listen carefully to the questions and ask for clarification if necessary
  • Repeat the question back to them in your answer to show that you are addressing the question and to keep you on track
  • Consider your body language and mirroring what the interviewer does. For example, lean forward if they lean forward, hands folded in your lap etc. Ideally, you would sit as still as possible and not fidget.
  • Keep your response or questions relevant to the role
  • Try to make all your comments and responses to questions positive
  • Show enthusiasm for the position
  • Outline why you would be the best candidate for the role

Don’ts

  • Use slang
  • Chew gum
  • Wear sunglasses or a hat
  • Share information that is not relevant to the role or doesn’t paint your skills, qualities or experience in a positive light
  • Criticise previous employers
  • Smoke before the interview
